Admissions Overview

Admission decisions at SAINT are based on an overall review of each applicant’s academic and research potential.
The evaluation focuses primarily on the following three criteria:

1.Statement of Purpose(30%):

Applicants are evaluated on the quality and clarity of their statement, with emphasis on the following aspects:

  • Academic preparedness and research motivation
  • Clear articulation of research interests and long-term goals
  • Fit with SAINT's academic and research environment
2.Academic Record(30%):

Academic performance is evaluated based on the cumulative GPA from all previously attended post-secondary institutions:

  • M.S. applicants: Undergraduate academic record
  • Ph.D. applicants: Graduate-level coursework(typically from M.S. programs)
3.Oral Examination(40%):

The oral interview is conducted in English and is designed to assess:

  • The applicant’s understanding of their field of interest
  • Communication skills and logical thinking
  • Research potential, academic readiness, and creativity
  • Required preparation for oral test:
    • M.S. applicants: A self-introduction and a presentation of the study plan(both in English)
    • Ph.D. applicants: A self-introduction, presentation of the study plan, and an overview of past research experiences or achievements(with relevant documents or certificates, in English)
Additional Notes
Basic Math Proficiency Test:

This exam will take place in the morning on the same day as the oral examination. Although it is not considered in the overall score, the result will inform the qualitative judgement of the admissions panel during the oral assessment.

Faculty Endorsement:

Although not mandatory, applicants are strongly encouraged to contact their preferred advisor and obtain a short recommendation letter indicating research interest and potential mentorship alignment.

Thesis Submission Qualification Exam(TSQE)

Purpose

Replace ineffective traditional written exams with substantive qualifying exams that involve public presentations on research background, theory, and proposed research topics. Through this format, cultivate logical reasoning and presentation skills, while conducting a thesis qualification exam that directly contributes to research.

    Evaluation by three faculty members in the respective semester.
